The key is to choose the oil that matches your engine design and operating conditions. The wrong oil can increase fuel consumption, make cold starts more difficult, and accelerate engine wear in the long run.

1) What does viscosity (SAE) mean?

The numbers you see on the bottle, such as 5W-30 or 10W-40, refer to viscosity.

W (Winter): Cold-start performance. The lower the number, the faster the oil flows in cold conditions.

The second number: High-temperature flow performance. This value helps maintain the protective oil film once the engine reaches operating temperature.

In short: Lower W values are beneficial in cold climates and for frequent short trips. As load and temperature increase, choosing the correct second value becomes even more important.

2) Why are API / ACEA standards important?

These standards indicate the oil’s performance class. For example, API classifications for gasoline and diesel engines, or ACEA’s European standards, show that the oil has passed certain performance tests. The standards specified in your vehicle owner’s manual are essential references.

3) Diesel / gasoline / turbo differences

Turbocharged engines operate under higher thermal stress. That makes oxidation resistance and film strength more important. In diesel vehicles, soot control and the detergent/dispersant additive package become more critical.

4) Consider your operating conditions

Urban short-distance driving: The oil takes longer to warm up, increasing the risk of deposits.

Long-distance driving: The oil operates more steadily, but temperature and duration-related stress increase.

Heavy load / towing: Film strength and viscosity selection become especially important.

5) Change interval: not “longer lasts better,” but “the right interval works better”

Oil change intervals are not based only on mileage, but also on time. Follow your vehicle owner’s manual, and keep the interval shorter under severe operating conditions.
